Grace Wrist-Warmers

My first pattern, so here goes:
(comments gratefully received...)

I designed these wrist-warmers for my sister, Grace. They are simple and quick to knit and use only one skein of yarn. The size will fit small hands.

What you’ll need…
One skein Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk DK in ‘bathtub’ (shade 125)
Small amount of DK yarn in green and white for leaves and flowers
Sequins and silver thread
Set of four 3.75mm double pointed needles
Pair of 3.75mm straight needles
Stitch holder or waste yarn
Tapestry needle
Sewing needle

Let’s get started…

RIGHT HAND

Cast On
Cast on 35 stitches onto one DPN. Divide between three needles and join to knit in the round, taking care not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker.

Cuff
Knit every stitch for 4 rounds. Purl 2 rounds, knit 2 rounds, purl 2 rounds.

Main body 1
Knit every round until wrist-warmer measures 11cm from the last purl round.

Thumb gusset
After your last completed round, knit 2 more stitches. This will be where the thumb gusset is placed. Place a stitch marker, knit 2 stitches, place another marker and continue knitting the remainder of the round.
*When you reach the first marker, slip the marker to the right hand needle and make 1 stitch, knit 2, make 1, slip stitch marker to right hand needle, continue knitting the round.
Knit all stitches on the next round.
Repeat from* until thumb gusset reaches the V between your thumb and forefinger.
Slip these stitches onto a stitch holder or waste yarn.

Main body 2
Make 2 stitches where thumb joins the main body
Knit every round for 3cm (or longer if you have long fingers)
Purl 2 rounds
Knit 4 rounds
Cast off.

Thumb
Slip the stitches from the stitch holder back onto your needles
You will need to pick up 5 stitches from where the thumb joins the main body to close up the gap
Knit every stitch for 6 rounds (or longer for a long thumb)
Purl 1 round
Cast off in purl.

LEFT HAND
Cast on and knit cuff and main body 1 as for right hand.
The thumb gusset needs to be placed on the opposite side so it fits the left thumb. To do this, knit until the 17th stitch of the round, place a stitch marker, knit 2, place another marker and knit the remainder of the round.
*When you reach the first marker, slip the marker to the right hand needle and make 1 stitch, knit 2, make 1, slip stitch marker to right hand needle, continue knitting the round.
Knit all stitches on the next round.
Repeat from * until thumb gusset reaches the V between your thumb and forefinger.
Slip these stitches onto a stitch holder or waste yarn.
Carry on with main body 2 and thumb.

Now for the decorations…

Flower (make 2)
With the white yarn cast on 25 stitches using the straight needles. Knit every stitch for 3 rows. Cut a tail of yarn approximately 15cm long and, using the tapestry needle, draw it through the stitches and pull tight. Secure and weave in ends.

Leaf (make 3)
With the green yarn cast on 2 stitches.
Row 1: K1, KFB (3 stitches)
Row 2: K1, KFB, K1 (4 stitches)
Row 3: K2, KFB, K1 (5 stitches)
Row 4: K
Row 5: K1, K2tog, K2 (4 stitches)
Row 6: K1, K2tog, K1 (3 stitches)
Row 7: K1, K2tog (2 stitches)
Row 8: K2tog (1 stitch)
Draw yarn through remaining stitch to secure and weave in ends.

Using the tapestry needles and a small amount of the same yarn, sew the leaves and flowers to the wrist-warmers according to the picture (or however you like!). Sew on some silver sequins using the sewing needle and silver threat for a little bit of sparkle.

Finished!

  1. I think the only DPNs I have are 3s. :( I'll grab some 5s next time I go out! I'd love to try this.
